Impact
The challenges posed by urbanization are numerous, including pollution, social inequality, and resource depletion. Through sustainable design practices, Bamboo Labs is addressing these complex issues and contributing to a more sustainable and equitable future. The impact of Bamboo Labs can be seen in the positive change its designs are bringing to urban communities worldwide.
Bamboo Labs' commitment to sustainable design has allowed the company to contribute meaningfully to the UN SDGs. By prioritizing the needs of people and the planet, Bamboo Labs is creating innovative, affordable, and accessible solutions for a wide range of urban communities. Through its work, the company is helping to build a more prosperous, equitable, and sustainable future for all.
Our UN Sustainable Development Goals
In Ethiopia, a national minimum wage does not exist. However, certain government institutions and public enterprises establish their own minimum wages. For instance, the public sector's monthly minimum wage is 420 birr ($21). Bamboo Labs aims to generate sustainable jobs and advance equality through the production and supply chain of bamboo transport systems.
The Ethiopian highlands suffer from severe erosion, affecting nearly half of the region and resulting in a 2-3% decline in annual agricultural GDP. Bamboo Labs is collaborating with local farmers to cultivate bamboo as a means of decreasing soil erosion and enhancing biodiversity. This approach enables farmers to generate extra income from previously unprofitable land.
Bamboo Labs is spearheading job creation in both rural Ethiopia and the bustling heart of Addis Ababa. As an Ethiopian enterprise, we take immense pride in our commitment to sourcing and producing 75% of our product within the country. This approach not only strengthens the local economy but also promotes self-sufficiency and resilience within the community.
Despite Ethiopia's significant progress in poverty reduction, gender inequality persists, and access to health and education services and other assets remains unequal. Bamboo Labs is working to tackle this challenge by improving mobility accessibility, ensuring that everyone has equal access to opportunities and benefits, leaving no one behind.
A central challenge we have taken on is reconciling environmental sustainability with economic development and social welfare by breaking the link between environmental degradation and economic growth, and maximizing resource efficiency. Our products exemplify this commitment, boasting a minimal material footprint comprising locally-sourced bamboo, sisal fabric, and eco-resin.
